Faith and Family in a Digital World

Finding Balance in the Age of Distraction

Elder Victor Igwe’s two-part series at Aberdeen SDA Church explores maintaining spiritual and family balance in a digital age. By viewing technology as a tool rather than an enemy, the presentations offer practical strategies—like "digital sabbaths" and "intentional presence"—to reclaim our attention and build a faith-led digital legacy.

In an era where our smartphones buzz more often than our doorbells, the Aberdeen Seventh-day Adventist Church recently hosted a compelling two-part series titled "Faith and the Family in a Digital World." Led by Elder Victor Igwe, these presentations explored a question many of us face daily: How do we maintain our faith and family connections when technology seems designed to pull us apart?

The Heart of the Matter: Tools, Not Masters

Elder Victor’s central message was clear: Technology is not the enemy; it is a tool. Much like a hammer can be used to build a home or destroy it, digital devices amplify what is already in our hearts. If we are filled with the Word of God, technology becomes a powerful medium for mission. However, if we aren't careful, it can become a source of "digital addiction" and emotional absence, even when we are physically present with our loved ones.

Key Takeaways for Digital Discipleship

Elder Victor outlined several practical strategies to help families move from just surviving to truly thriving in a digital age:

  • Audit Your "Amplifier": Take an honest look at your apps. Do they point you toward Christ or push you away? Elder Victor encouraged the congregation to "reclaim your attention from the algorithm" by being intentional about the content we consume.

  • Create Sacred Spaces: Establish "tech-free zones" in the home, particularly around the dinner table and in the bedroom. Elder Victor highlighted that "presence matters more than proxy"—nothing can replace the value of face-to-face interaction.

  • Build a Digital Legacy: Every post, comment, and "like" creates a permanent digital footprint. Elder Victor challenged us to think about the legacy we are leaving for our children’s children. Does our online presence reflect a life led by faith?

  • The Gift of the Digital Sabbath: Perhaps the most profound suggestion was the "Digital Sabbath"—an intentional pause from screens to rediscover peace and God’s voice. By setting aside devices on the Sabbath, we create the mental and spiritual space needed to truly hear God.

A Community of Resources

At Aberdeen SDA Church, we believe that living a balanced, faithful life in the 21st century requires both ancient wisdom and modern discernment. We are constantly looking for different resources to help our community navigate life's challenges, from mental well-being to spiritual growth.

Elder Victor’s presentations weren't just about "screen time"; they were about intentionality. As he noted, "We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us".
